Cars that start only with the right key!
Along with other expensive equipment protection, vehicle security technologies have advanced a great deal over the past decade or so. As a result, transponder keys now play a significant part of those security protocols. In fact, the government of Canada has mandated all cars sold since 2008 be ignition immobilizer equipped – which need transponder keys.
Transponder keys have programmed chips implanted in them which, when inserted into the ignition of a car will check to verify certain information about the car or the owner. If the details do not match, it means the key does not belong to the car. Transponder keys will thus immobilize the car to protect potential vehicle theft.
Historically, transponder keys could only be acquired from the OEM, or the car dealer. And usually that took a long time – sometimes several days – to arrange. However, certified locksmith technicians can now cut and program transponder keys for your vehicle in record time.
By going to a registered locksmith, you not only save time, but you can also save between 30% to 50% of the cost, depending on the make and model of the car. But at the end of it all, you are guaranteed to get the exact transponder keys that the OEM would deliver.
As a tool for preventing auto theft, transponder keys play an important role. However, make sure you only use a full-service locksmith who is a member of credible industry associations, such as the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA), the Institutional Locksmiths Organization of Canada (ILOC), and the Safe & Vault Technicians Association (SAVTA).
